I was researching for my next post and this offer came up that I could not believe. I am trying to replicate, but here is what I know:
- I did not click through any cashback site or mall
- I have been to the Staples website before
- I let the website sit without any activity for at least 15 minutes in a different tab
So here’s the details:
- It’s a one time offer for that session in the browser for 5% off, even on gift cards
- The offer is valid for 20 minutes only

Has anyone else seen this before?
Before I left for Asia, I bought a few hundred worth of Nordstrom gift cards for $0.99 shipping. Office Max has now raised it to $2.49 per card. I slowed my purchases from Office Max and would have stopped because of the Open savings are going away, but this just expedited me from purchasing more from them.

Recently there were links of targeted offers of 50,000 Membership Reward points with Card Match for the American Express Premier Rewards Gold card. Unfortunately, I was not targeted for that offer when searching on Card Match.
When there were no offers for me, I called American Express to see what personalized offers they had and they came up with two. 30,000 point sign up bonuses for both the Business Rewards Gold and Business Platinum cards. Both are better than the public offer, but nothing that blew me away to want to sign up for a new card.
If you’re in the market for an American Express card and can’t find any good public links, I’d recommend calling American Express and see what offers they have that you might not know.
I had written about how Discover is quite generous with their rewards, and I thought Discover’s 5% online shopping would be the same, but I guessed wrong.
The 5% cash back for online purchases must be categorized as “merchandise” by Discover in order to receive 5% back. My purchases from Living Social and a Discover gift card were credited 1% instead of a 5% online purchases. Everything else was eligible for the 5%
Walmart and the lines blanked out totaled $888.26 and dividing the cashback received of $44.42 by .05 the quotient is $888.4 so those numbers line up.
The everything else cash back is $5.28 and that’s the Discover Gift Card and Living Social total of $528.95 which also line up.
I already drained the Discover gift card through Amazon Payments, but I think that the Discover gift card would have a PIN since the home improvement gift cards run on the Discover network and had a PIN. Discover gift cards can only be purchased with a Discover card for a $3.95 fee.
New Jersey has now allowed online gambling over the Internet and this has created an interesting opportunity. In the past before I began chasing the points, when I played online poker, I used to fund my poker accounts with a credit card. Now that New Jersey allows online gambling, this presents a possibility to manufacture spend with prepaid cards funding poker rooms with the prepaid cards.
I tried Party Poker and this does not work. There’s definitely a bunch of kinks that need to be ironed out before we can look at this further. Stay tuned!
